Extrait de Parfum vs Eau de Parfum: What's the Difference?

Walk into any perfume shop and you will be met with a small vocabulary test: eau de toilette, eau de parfum, parfum, extrait. The labels look similar, the bottles can be identical, and the price differences are not always easy to explain.

If you have ever wondered about extrait de parfum vs eau de parfum, and which is really worth your money, this guide will clear things up. We will also share our favourite tips for making any perfume last longer.

Fragrance Concentrations, Explained

Every perfume is a blend of fragrance oils (the aromatic materials that create the scent) dissolved in alcohol, sometimes with a little water. The label tells you, roughly, how much fragrance oil is in the bottle.

There is no single legal standard, and every perfume house sets its own formula, but these are the ranges most commonly quoted:

Concentration Typical fragrance oil content How it tends to wear
Eau de Cologne around 2–5% Light, brief, refreshing
Eau de Toilette (EDT) around 5–15% Fresh and airy
Eau de Parfum (EDP) around 15–20% Fuller, longer-lasting
Extrait de Parfum around 20–40% Rich, dense, lingering

As a rule of thumb, the higher the concentration, the richer the scent and the longer it tends to stay with you.

What Is Extrait de Parfum?

Extrait de Parfum (literally "perfume extract", and sometimes labelled simply Parfum or Pure Perfume) is the most concentrated form of fragrance you can usually buy. Because it contains more fragrance oil and less alcohol, it behaves a little differently on the skin.

Historically, extraits were the most precious thing a perfume house made, often sold in tiny bottles. Today, more and more houses offer full-size extraits for people who want their fragrance to feel as rich and complete as possible.

Extrait de Parfum vs Eau de Parfum: The Key Differences

Concentration

The most obvious difference: an extrait contains more fragrance oil than an eau de parfum. That means more of the materials that give a scent its character, particularly the heavier woods, resins, ambers and musks that form the base.

How it opens

Because there is less alcohol, an extrait often has a softer, smoother opening, without the sharp "alcohol lift" you sometimes notice in the first few seconds after spraying. You meet the fragrance itself more quickly.

How it wears

An eau de parfum tends to radiate more in the first hour, throwing its top notes into the air. An extrait often feels denser and more enveloping, unfolding slowly and lingering for longer. Many people describe it as feeling like a part of their skin rather than something sitting on top of it.

Value per wear

An extrait can look more expensive per bottle, but you typically need fewer sprays to enjoy it. One or two applications is often enough, which means a bottle can last longer than you might expect.

Which Should You Choose?

There is no wrong answer; it depends on how you like to wear fragrance.

Choose an eau de parfum if you enjoy a bright, diffusive scent, like to reapply through the day, or prefer to switch between fragrances often.

Choose an extrait de parfum if you want depth and richness, love woody, amber, vanilla or oud notes, want a fragrance that keeps you company from morning to evening, or are wearing scent in cold weather, when lighter concentrations can seem to vanish.

How to Make Perfume Last Longer

Whatever the concentration, a few small habits make a real difference.

Apply to moisturised skin

Fragrance holds on to hydrated skin far better than dry skin. Apply an unscented moisturiser first, especially in winter when central heating and cold air dry everything out.

Choose your spots wisely

Pulse points such as the inner wrists, the base of the throat, behind the ears and the inner elbows are warm, which helps a fragrance unfold. Fabric holds scent beautifully too: a light mist on a scarf or jumper can carry a fragrance well into the evening.

Do not rub your wrists together

It is a hard habit to break, but rubbing creates friction and heat that can flatten the top notes. Spray, then let it settle on its own.

Store it properly

Heat, light and humidity are perfume's enemies. Keep your bottles away from sunny windowsills and steamy bathrooms; a cool drawer or cupboard is ideal.

Spray, do not drench

With an extrait especially, more is not always better. Start with one or two sprays and see how the fragrance develops over the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is extrait de parfum stronger than eau de parfum?

Generally, yes. Extrait de Parfum contains a higher concentration of fragrance oil, so it usually feels richer and lasts longer, though it often sits a little closer to the skin.

Is parfum the same as extrait de parfum?

Usually, yes. "Parfum", "Extrait de Parfum" and "Pure Perfume" are all used for the most concentrated version of a fragrance.

How many sprays of extrait de parfum should I use?

Start with one or two. Extraits are concentrated, so a little goes a long way, and you can always add more.

Why does my perfume fade so quickly?

Dry skin, heat and over-exposure to light are common culprits. Moisturise before applying, spray onto pulse points or clothing, and store your bottle somewhere cool and dark.
